Identifying Local Opportunities



In the article, written January 16, 2019, the author writes about a series of incidents occurring in a South Florida assisted-living facility resulting in a $16,500 fine. There are a number of heartbreaking incidents that clearly show worker negligence and inhumanity.

The disturbing incidents at the New Era Community Health Care facility were issued by the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA).
            The first one is of a woman who died due to a seizure that the facility ignored.
            The second incident is of three resident runaways resulting in fractures and dehydration because they walked 25 miles to get air conditioning and food. When the workers noticed, they did not immediately notify police.
            The third incident, a woman attempted suicide. She wasn’t being carefully watched although she was on suicide watch.
The problem is that those that the people living in the assisted living facility are being cared with negligence, proven through specific incidents, and a $16,500 fine isn’t going to be a wakeup call.

The people: the people living in the New Era Community Health Care assisted living facility, along with those being neglected and not properly cared for in other assisted living facilities.

2.     A KFC worker and customer got into a fight over a health violation. Then the chicken flew
In the article, written on January 17, 2019, a customer records a KFC worker Simmons committing restaurant health violations. This includes not washing her hands and proceeding to food prep on a table with cockroaches, and then rudely throwing the food at the customers face.

The problem: KFC worker wasn’t following health protocols, and was blatantly rude to the customer. Simmons did get arrested and fired.

Who has the problem: KFC and their customers because incidents like this makes the fast food restaurant look bad


3.     Brickell hotel ordered to pay former dishwasher $21.5 million - for retaliation over her religion

The article written on January 17, 2019, explains an act of religious discrimination occurring to an employee. Pierre told her boss that she can’t work on Sundays for religious purposes but was ignored and assigned to work on Sundays. When she didn’t, the boss fired her. The federal court ordered the hotel to pay $21.5 million in lost wages, emotional anguish, and punitive damages.

The problem: religious discrimination occurring in a work environment. Brickell hotel failed to respect their employees, and it was shown through the training of the kitchen manager, who fired her for unethical reasons.

Who has the problem: The employee that was fired solely for religious purposes, and Brickell hotels for the loss of a lot of money.


4.     Teens burned to death after 116-mph crash. Lawsuit blames Tesla for the speed and fire.

The article, written on January 9, 2019, is about two 18 year olds fatal Tesla car crash. Tesla installed a speed limiter (85 mph) device, which was improperly removed a month later. The crash was at a speed of 116 mph.

The problem is that Tesla improperly removed the device without the permission or consent a month later by Tesla mechanics.

Who has the problem: The two teenagers that died in the crash, the parents that have to live without their child, and Tesla who is facing the lawsuit.

5.     $15 minimum wage could cripple small business - My Word

The article, written on January 16, 2019 is written from the perspective on a woman with a small importing business, explaining how a $15 starting wage, would result in having to cut back on staff and do everything alone.

The problem is that raising the minimum wage would result in many people out of work, and many businesses, especially small ones, failing.

Who has the problem: Small businesses and employees that may lose their jobs.

    This was a very thorough post identifying some pretty significant problems. The only one that confused me was number 4 about Tesla. I did not quite understand what exactly the problem was and who was responsible for it but I guess I can read the article myself, haha. I also included an article raising the problem of an increased 15$ minimum wage on my blog- mine focused on farmers if anyone is interested in reading it.

    My friend once did a project on the negative effects of raising minimum wage, so I thought it was interesting to read how this impacts many people. Do you think there is an opportunity in relation to this issue? I also thought your KFC article title was kind of funny – “The Chicken Flew”. However, it is disgusting that health protocols weren’t being followed. You’re absolutely right, incidences like these make the fast food industry look bad.
