Assignment 2A- Bug List

Bug 1:The home I live in Gainesville is extremely temperature sensitive, so when it is cold outside, it’s freezing in my house, and when it is hot outside its scorching indoors, which causes it to use up the air conditioning and waste energy.
Why does it exist? I believe the windows and the way the house is built lacks proper insulation.

Bug 2:In the WholeFoods on Archer Road, it seems like every time I go inside to buy produce, they don’t have enough of what I need. Especially carrot bags, which I juice. This rarely happened in any other WholeFoods I’ve been in.
Why does it exist?Either I am coincidentally shopping on the days they need to restock, or they aren’t buying enough produce.

Bug 3: For Internet, I use Cox Communications, and they raised their price out of nowhere from $40 to almost $60 a month just because I have been using them for over a year.
Why does it exist? The original cheaper price is to attract customers to their business.

Bug 4: In every WholeFoods, since Amazon bought them out, they give deals on very minimal items for their “amazon prime” customers.
Why does it exist? To promote amazon prime, but to conserve money at the same time.

Bug 5:The amount of plastic we as consumers use in every day life, such as bags and straws
Why does it exist? We are used to plastic and find it convenient.

Bug 8:There is limited parking space at UF and it takes me at least 30 minutes every morning to find a space.
Why does it exist? Minimal student parking garages or spaces in general.

Bug 9:The Chilis on Archer Road, and every Chili for that matter, has the longest wait times for seating, ordering food, receiving food, and even receiving the check in my opinion.
Why does it exist? It could be under staffing or poor training

Bug 10: Every Pacsun I’ve been to is not properly wheelchair accessible, and my sister being disabled makes it difficult for her to shop there, along with everyone else in a wheelchair.
Why does it exist? The way the stores are built aren’t inclusive to those that are disabled

Bug 11:Minimal wheelchair accessible beaches
Why does it exist? Not enough funding or there isn’t enough attention

Bug 12: It is completely normalized to use chlorine in pools, where there are safer and healthier alternatives
Why does it exist? It is normalized, as well as the cheapest option

Bug 13:Finding a home in Gainesville that allows students was extremely challenging
Why does it exist? Many homes don’t accept students because most students have to have cosigning, but this isn’t an issue for apartments.

Bug 14:The City of Gainesville doesn’t require any restaurant to recycle or provide bins
Why does it exist? Most likely funding and lack of recycling routes including restaurants.

Bug 15: The United States is the only developed country without universal health care
Why does it exist? Our tax dollars are used elsewhere and we pride too much on money

Bug 16: As a vegan, the mass production and normalization of animal slaughtering bothers me
Why does it exist? People don’t want to give up animal products mostly because of taste

Bug 17: GRU is a monopoly in Gainesville, which makes pricing for energy very unfair in my opinion.
Why does it exist? It is profitable for the company.

Bug 18: Public restrooms at UF don’t have proper feminine hygiene disposals, resulting in having to flush them down the toilet.
Why does it exist? Not enough attention brought to this subject

Bug 19:The Turnpike is constantly under long construction periods with minimal improvements, while charging at high rates
Why does it exist? Not enough funding, even though it doesn’t feel that way to me

Bug 20: Gas stations pump handles are filled with germs from constant use, aren’t cleaned, and there aren’t gloves supplied at most stations
Why does it exist? Gas stations feel like it isn’t their responsibility and aren’t required to do so.

Creating my Bug List was quite challenging because I try to let go of the things that bother me rather than holding on to them. By doing this, I forget that it exists, so reaching back into my memory and ‘bad’ thoughts wasn’t easy or enjoyable honestly. It did, however, allow me to be more aware of the things that either don’t make sense to me or completely bother me. By making me think of why they exist in the first place, it allowed me to understand every “Bug” and make me feel a little better when there is nothing attainable that could be done to change it.

  1. Hey Ariel!
It was nice reading your post. I included some of the same bugs as you in my list as well. I also found coming up with bugs was a challenge for me. This was mostly because I have a bad memory and couldn't remember the specific situations that had bugs in them. I only remember bugs when I'm actually put in the situation again.

  2. Awesome list. I can also relate to the struggle of trying to come up with Bugs because in the past I've learned to try to let things go! However, I think this exercise is great because it doesn't just ask us to come up with things to complain about but also why it exists. This allows for a more problem-solving approach versus just aimlessly complaining. I think you touched on that in your reflection.
